Savannah, GA and More Inverter Trouble

We arrived in beautiful Savannah, GA on Monday after two nights “on the hook” (anchoring) in the creeks of the “low country”.  That was quite an experience with eight foot tides and accompanying currents.  We really enjoyed the time to relax and plan the rest of our trip.

Our inverter however seems to have been jealous of all of the attention our propellers have had on this trip and blew out again our second night out.  Obviously, something in the boat’s electrical or generator system is causing a back-feed that is damaging the inverter and causing it to crash.  Wonderful.
We arrived at Isle of Hope Marina (aptly named, given my hope we can find a good marine electrician who can diagnose the problem) too late on Monday to worry much about the inverter, so the Boreas crew and we took off in the marina loaner car and spent an hour or so walking in the historic district of downtown Savannah.  Mostly we were hungry and we landed at a little place called “Sapphire Grill” and had an excellent dinner.  We drove around a bit and caught glimpses of Savannah that made us glad we planned a few days here to explore it more thoroughly.
But, back to real life, Tuesday morning my First Mate and I rented a car and drove to Orlando (275 miles each way) to get the inverter we had shipped there for repair.  If I find a good electrician and if the guy figures out what’s blowing these things up, we actually have a spare now.  Isn’t that just peachy?
The highlight of our long day came when the Admiral used Yelp on her iPhone to find a “local” barbeque restaurant on our long drive back to Savannah.  It was about 10 miles off the beaten path in a little town called Woodbine, GA.  It is known as “Captain Stan’s Smokehouse”.  It is hard to describe the place, so I hope the photos do it justice.

There were 3 times this many bikes when we left there

The sink in the courtyard???
Carrie half-jokingly asked one of the waitresses what the stainless steel sink was for.  Were we supposed to wash up in it?  She thought for a second, then cocked her head and answered, “It’s only been here for a coupla days…I’m not really sure what the heck it is for.”  She grabbed a guy who looked like he may have been the one to install it and asked him to tell us its purpose.  Apparently he had been pondering its use himself, and he rattled off, “Well, I beena thinkin’ bout that.  It is fed from a natural spring out back, so you’re right, we might could use it fer washin’ up…or a bird bath, or maybe bobbin’ fer apples…or we also could perform baptisms in it I suppose…but kinda we just like the way the water running into it sounds in the mornin’.”  Given the eclectic nature of the rest of the “décor” of Captain Stan’s, I think he was being entirely honest with us.  It’s just a “water feature”, like a fountain or waterfall in some restaurants.  The background music playing was just as wide-ranging as the décor.  It included country music (of course), some 70’s, some oldies, gospel and at least one Christmas carol!  None of it seemed to faze anyone.
Anyway, the barbequed ribs were amazing.  I had mine with baked beans and collard greens (when in Rome, right?).  Carrie had the slaw and new red potato salad with her ribs.  Everything tasted home cooked and delicious.  The rest of the clientele seemed to find us just about as curious as we found them, and everyone was friendly.  We left stuffed and we will not soon forget Captain Stan’s!
Well, the electrician is due any minute…so off I go.
